The term surgery brings a lot of scary images in our minds even before we know about the procedure and its safety level. This is quite natural when you consider that every surgical procedure has its own risks and cataract surgery is no different. By gauging the level of risks and weighing the safety factors that are adopted, one has to take a well informed decision about surgery.
Then there are instances when health problems might give no option but to go for surgery. Whatever may be the condition, close counseling by doctors before the surgery helps patients get educated about the different aspects of the procedure. This gives them confidence in the procedure and drives away unwanted fears that are figments of imagination. Counseling is thus a part of any surgical procedure.
Cataract also affects younger people
Cataracts occur in elderly people who have crossed at least 70 years. However, there is no defined age limit for it as it can happen even in younger people. Those who are nearing 50 or have just crossed it might experience cataract.
However, the number of people belonging to this group is quite less. Doctors usually try to make people bear with the cataract conditions as long as possible only to avoid the complications that are associated with cataract surgery . This is the reason that surgeries are normally performed on people who have grown quite old. Since cataract can also affect younger people, it is better to know about the early signs of cataract so that one can stay alert.
Watch out for the signs
Your vision and visibility level as measured on an eye chart is the prime indicator to evaluate cataract conditions. If you have visual acuity 20/20 or 20/25 as seen on an eye chart, then it is assumed that there are no reasons to worry about cataract.
However, it has been noticed that deciding on the basis of eye chart only is not a reliable method. People who exhibit the right numbers can also be affected by cataract that is in the early stages of development. There are some physical signs and symptoms of cataract that have also to be considered. If you see halos around light sources at night including street lights and brighter lights then there is reason to suspect that you have cataract.
Get it confirmed
This is the time when you should get it confirmed through further tests. The results of the contrast sensitivity test would confirm if you have cataract. In this test a bright light is pointed to the eyes and if readability of the eye chart shows that your readability is poor then it is cataract only. Moreover, if on closing the good eye, you see a wax like screen in front of all objects, it confirms the case.
Instead of treading further to experiment and buy time, it is advisable that you consult an ophthalmologist. Based on the findings, he or she is likely to advise cataract surgery. This is when you have to be counseled and get prepared for surgery.
