The decision to go for the hip replacement surgery is a big one even after the failure of all other alternative non-invasive methods has failed to give the results. First of all the patient has to make up his mind firmly to under the knife. Then the body has to be prepared for the same and many arrangements for pre and post-operative care have to be in place before one takes the final plunge. The near and dear ones are also to be involved and somebody reliable has to be by the side of the patient giving all the required support whether mental or moral. But once the patient makes an informed and firm decision to get back into his normal lifestyle, the post-op results are always better.
- A few weeks before surgery
It is very important to prepare your body, mind and home well in advance to cope with the challenges of post-operative period. Arrangements have to be made for the support at home once you are back from the hospital. Guidance should be taken from the physiotherapist for the pre-op exercises to strengthen the upper body so that one can use the crutches after the surgery which would be needed for some time.
- Talk to your surgeon and remove doubts
Once you are mentally prepared for the total hip replacements you must visit your surgeon but you must be well prepared for an interaction with him so that you can ask him about the different procedures and possibilities available and suitable for you. It would put to rest any doubts that may be lurking at the back of your mind.
- A week before surgery
Walking even with the help of crutches is quite difficult during the initial days of the post-op period and hence one need to prepare the home accordingly. Everything should be planned and arranged in the home in such a fashion that the need for the movement is bare minimum and there is no undue discomfort because of the same. Doing simple things like arranging a chair in the shower and a toilet seat riser which has arms could reduce the discomfort in the later stages to quite an extent.
- The surgery day
The team of doctors would meet you and describe the ins and outs of the whole procedure. One must ask any questions one may have regarding the surgery. The operation may last 2-3 hours and the therapy begins almost immediately after the procedure is over so as to lower the risk of developing any blood clots by improving blood circulation.
- Hospital stay
The therapist would guide the patient the safer ways of getting in and out of the bed or chair. A professional guidance is provided to teach exercises for slowly improving the mobility and strength.
- Few weeks after surgery
With the help of medication and exercises one may be almost back to the normal life routine with the patient being able to walk and do low impact exercises like swimming etc.
