  1. A few weeks before surgery

It is very important to prepare your body, mind and home well in advance to cope with the challenges of post-operative period. Arrangements have to be made for the support at home once you are back from the hospital. Guidance should be taken from the physiotherapist for the pre-op exercises to strengthen the upper body so that one can use the crutches after the surgery which would be needed for some time.

Doing simple things like arranging a chair in the shower and a toilet seat riser which has arms could reduce the discomfort in the later stages to quite an extent.

The team of doctors would meet you and describe the ins and outs of the whole procedure. One must ask any questions one may have regarding the surgery. The operation may last 2-3 hours and the therapy begins almost immediately after the procedure is over so as to lower the risk of developing any blood clots by improving blood circulation.

  1. Hospital stay

The therapist would guide the patient the safer ways of getting in and out of the bed or chair. A professional guidance is provided to teach exercises for slowly improving the mobility and strength.

  1. Few weeks after surgery

With the help of medication and exercises one may be almost back to the normal life routine with the patient being able to walk and do low impact exercises like swimming etc.
