Whilst rattan furniture is great for adding a touch of style to outdoor spaces, that’s not the only reason why it’s so popular. Rattan furniture also happens to be very low maintenance, making it a great choice for those who don’t have time to look after their furniture.
It doesn’t take a lot of effort to keep rattan garden furniture looking as good as new, all you need to do is follow our six tips below.
Synthetic rattan furniture can withstand most weather conditions but you’ll need to give it a clean every now and then to keep it looking as good as new!
- Wipe it
One of the easiest and quickest ways to keep your rattan garden furniture in a good condition is to give it a wipe every couple of weeks. Simply dampen a soft cloth with warm water, squeeze it out and gently wipe it over your rattan furniture to remove any dirt and marks. This should do the job just fine! Don’t be tempted to use cleaning products as they often contain harsh chemicals that can discolour your rattan.
- Give it a hoover
If your rattan furniture is looking a little dusty, you may want to give it a quick hoover. To do this you will need to use the brush attachment on your hoover. This attachment will allow you to get into your rattan furniture’s nooks, crannies and crevices to remove all of the dust.
- Hose it down
If your synthetic rattan furniture is really dirty (perhaps you’ve left it out for a while) then you’ll need to hose it down. Just make sure your hose is on a low water pressure setting as to avoid damaging the weave.
When hosing down your rattan furniture, we also recommend tipping it so the water can quickly run off. Although synthetic rattan is water resistant, you still don’t want to drench it in water, as you could risk loosening the weaves and making them weak.
Once you have finished hosing down your rattan furniture, wipe off the excess water and leave it out in the sun to dry.
- Remove stains immediately
Synthetic rattan is fairly stain resistant; however it is still best to wipe up spillages as quickly as possible to avoid permanent damage. The longer you leave it, the harder it will be to remove the stain, as it may start to penetrate the surface and soak into the material.
When removing stains from your rattan furniture, it’s best to use a soft cloth dampened with warm water. Avoid using cleaning chemicals and scourers as they can damage the surface of your furniture and cause it to discolour.
If you have left the stain too long and are struggling to remove it, your best option is to use bleach and water solution. This is a little risky as it can weaken the structure of your rattan furniture, although if you are only doing a spot clean, the risk of permanent damage is low.
- Cover it up
Whilst synthetic rattan furniture can withstand most weather conditions, it’s still a good idea to cover it up if you plan on leaving it outside for extended period of time. Invest in a waterproof cover to keep the rain off your furniture. The cover will also help to protect your furniture from the sunlight, which can sometimes cause discolouration.
If your pets sit on your rattan furniture, the cushions and seating pads will need washing regularly to keep them in a good condition.
- Replace soft furnishings
One of the great things about rattan furniture is that it is extremely durable. This means that it can often go years without requiring any maintenance. The same however cannot be said for the soft furnishings that come with it. Cushions and seating paddings require regularly cleaning in order to keep them looking as good as new.
They are also likely to need replacing after a couple of years so they don’t make your rattan furniture look shabby and old.
Out of all the different types of garden furniture available, rattan furniture is one of the easiest to keep in a good condition. There’s no need to paint or varnish it. Giving it a quick wipe every now and then and ensuring spillages are cleaned up quickly will be enough to keep it looking as good as new.
