One thing that you need to be careful of is cornering. If you are on a mountain trail, you might find that you have very little space around some corners, so you should always approach them with complete care and attention. When you are turning a corner, you should always counter-steer, as this means that you are able to approach with a little more speed whilst still having absolute control of your bike when going around the corner.

As you are going round, you should try to shift your weight forward a little, so that it is more towards the front of the bike. This means that if you are required to turn more sharply than you realised, you should be able to do this without a problem.

You should also remember that riding uphill requires a very different approach to riding downhill – as obviously your body will need to put a lot more effort into riding uphill, whilst you will be more focussing on retaining control when you are on the downwards journey after your ascent. When you are riding up a hill, you should approach it in the same way as you would approach a corner, with your body weight as far to the front of the bike as you can possibly get it.

This means that you would be able to keep your wheel steady, and therefore keep your bike exactly where you want it on the trail path – very important if you’re in dangerous terrain, or somewhere that you have never ridden before. You should always stay in your seat, as standing up can actually reduce both the power that you’re able to put behind your pedals and also your balance, which might prove to be dangerous whilst mountain biking.

When you are riding downhill, however, it is fine to stand up – and this can be one of the most exhilarating experiences of the whole sport. You should remember to keep looking right ahead of you for upcoming corners, and when you choose to sit down you should ensure that your knees are facing in the direction that you wish to travel – this makes your ride a lot more predictable and controlled.

Ultimately, mountain biking can be one of the best sports to do, particularly if you’re lucky enough to be able to experience destinations such as Morzine in the alps.
