Why patient education is so important for bariatric surgery?

Are you suffering from clinically severe obesity?  If the answer is yes, then you have to undertake weight loss surgery. The doctor will tell you whether you are suffering from the particular condition by conducting tests to detect whether you are afflicted by some serious diseases that arise from obesity.  If you are obese and have high blood pressure, diabetes, heart diseases, sleep apnea or even experience stroke then your condition will be termed as clinically severe obesity.

It will thus be clear that the purpose of surgery is not only to reduce weight but also to treat any of the diseases that you have. Therefore, being obsess only does not qualify you for the surgery if you do not have any of the life threatening diseases.  Once the need for surgery is established, the doctor begins to lead you towards the surgery by taking the first step – patient education.

Need for patient education

For most people the wider impact of weight loss surgery is often not understood as they focus on losing weight only. But like many things in life, you have to pay the price for what you want to be, here also there are many life changing events would happen after the surgery. And to make it happen, you have to bear with many restrictions in food habits and lifestyle that would be imposed upon you. Only when these are accepted and practiced as advised by the doctor that you will be able to enjoy the benefits of surgery. By sharing valuable knowledge about the surgery and explaining its impact on your health, the doctor actually sets the levels of realistic expectations so that there is no gap in communication between the doctor and the patient.

Selecting the surgical procedure

There are several types of surgery that can be performed for weight loss .  Sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, adjustable bands, duodenal switch and gastric balloon are all surgical procedures for bariatric surgery which is the other name of surgery for losing weight. The procedure that is selected will be driven by the health condition of the patient and the extent of weight reduction that has to be achieved.  The doctor enlightens patients about the procedure that is most appropriate for him or her so that the patient is completely convinced about it. Since trust plays an important role in medical treatment, this step is vital for the success of the procedure.

Results are to be sustained

Another purpose of patient education is to ensure that the results of surgery can be sustained for longer period and for the rest of life of the patient.  The patient has to follow the guidelines of diet and exercise together with life style changes after the surgery to speed up recovery and start leading a normal life. Although life will be normal, it will be quite different from the earlier life. Disciplined lifestyle that moves with the clock coupled with healthy diet contributes to long term benefits of surgery.

Unless the patient is convinced and ready to accept and practice the changes that are to happen, it is pointless to go for the surgery.
